Expanding on Topical Tweets

I've been pretty prolific on Twitter recently, and thought I'd expand on a few of my posts on some of the hot topics of the week.

Government grants intended for grassroots football get diverted to establish the Western Sydney Wanderers A-League franchise, which is later sold. From what I have seen the FFA does not seem to have been made very accountable in putting any of the proceeds from that sale back into the original purpose of those government grants. Pretty scandalous if you ask me. The Wanderers players threaten to boycott the Club World Championships after the club only offers them 10% of the tournament prize-money as a bonus on top of the contracts they are already having met and a bonus for having won the Asian Champions League. If the football internet is to be believed, this is almost on par with how Margaret Thatcher dealt with coal-miners.
The Professional Footballers Association, so quick to aid their A-League members, not in sight when NPL players are getting short changed. Just goes to show that those in power in Australian football focus 95% of their attention to the top level and don't give a rats what happens below it. Which won't bode well for the future...
Now a lot of people pushing for the reform that saw the introduction of the NPL liked to label VPL players "mercenaries". Mercenaries needed to be eliminated from the second tier to give youngsters more opportunities (in Victoria this seems to mean opportunities to youngsters from Queensland). The fact that by removing older, experienced and better players from the competition they would be limiting the development of those youngsters is generally overlooked. Strangely, A-League players on far bigger wages holding a club to ransom do not seem to be labelled "mercenaries". Even when a lot of them are on their third or fourth A-League club. There's no standard like a double standard.

Those stridently against VPL/NPL mercenaries would like to see them paid less with the money put into youth development and facilities instead. Yet when the FFA gets Federal funding for youth development and facilities, it diverts the money elsewhere without a peep of protest from those critics. Again, A-League clubs get all the favours from the FFA and those below them must fend for themselves, no assistance offered. A situation not likely to improve given the FFA's latest intentions....

The other big talking point was the Melbourne leg of the FFA's Whole of Football Plan public forums. Paul Mavroudis attended it and you can read his version of events here. I didn't because I don't intend to be involved at club level anymore and didn't think it would be anything other than a sham. This is how the FFA reported it

Ex-Football Victoria chairman and former FFA director Jack Reilly said successful long-term planning for the game had to start with governance reform. "Until you have a national governing body that has a strong and clear mandate, the game will struggle to achieve its potential," said Reilly. "The current structure of national, state and regional administration leads to overlap, waste in resources and no real alignment. We need to change that first so there's one national body with a clear mandate from top to bottom."

So the most important topic of the night in their eyes was not what the regular punters on the floor discussed, but what one of their men said to set their next agenda in motion. Football New South Wales must be sitting on some valuable assets for talk of FFA eliminating the State Federations to start up again. To give it more traction, the story on Four Four Two Australia included quotes from the FFA's go to back up man, Roy Hay.

Now I'm hardly the FFV's biggest fan, but to see them replaced to give the FFA more power would be a great worry given some of the governance concerns I've outlined above. Given their lack of focus on the grassroots and over the top concentration on the elite levels, it's easy to see who would be the loser in that outcome.

Grounds of the Past: Hurlingham Park, East Brighton

Hurlingham Park was the home of the old Brighton Soccer Club. The club played from the East Brighton venue from foundation in 1924 until a move to Elsternwick Park in 1954. In their time there the club were Dockerty Cup winners on five occasions, as well as securing the First Division Championship (then the State Championship) in 1949.

That year the reserves also won their league championship, and a photo of that team on their website gives us a small glimpse at Hurlingham Park featuring a pavilion that no longer stands:

We can see from the plaque on the current pavilion that it was erected in 1955, after Brighton had moved on to the enclosed ground at Elsternwick Park prior to relocating to Dendy Park in 1959.

The ground was, and still remains, the home of the Brighton Union Cricket Club (founded in 1907). As such it would have been another soccer ground in a large open park, probably with the sides roped off to keep spectators away from the touchlines.

The pavilion is situated on the busy Nepean Highway side of the ground. A pre-school sits to the east, housing in the north with a tennis club in the north west corner. To the west of the pavilion sits a memorial to those lost in the First World War:

Hurlingham Park is another ground thousands of people will drive past every day with little idea that the premier footballers in the state once strutted their stuff there. Four sets of traffic lights and less than two kilometres further down the Nepean Highway sits Dendy Park, current home of the Brighton SC. The club struck financial difficulties in the mid-1990's and ceased fielding a senior team in 1996. The strong junior base survived and thrived, and in 2007 a senior team was accepted into the FFV's Provisional League Division Three South East.

Victorian Soccer Officials

As well as trying to gather the statistical history of Victorian football, I've also tried maintaining other records. Once such record follows, a list of executive and board positions of the governing body through the years.

I publish it without making any amendments. In some cases names, or at least middle initials mainly, vary for the same person. I've yet to correct these. I've added in where people have been made Life Members. To be a Life Member you obviously have to be alive, and the names of those deceased would be removed from the lists published in Yearbooks. Which makes it harder to ascertain the full number of people awarded the honour.

A Vice-President in 1888, David Gaunson was a solicitor who had represented Ned Kelly. He was also the basis for the Davie Garside character in Frank Hardy's Power Without Glory. Mr.T.Bent M.L.A. would become Sir Thomas Bent and a Premier of Victoria. The suburb of Bentleigh was named after him.

Soccer? Football? Or is the name of the game now Souvlaki?

There's been a lot of good come out of the FFA Cup, and a few things that can be improved on. A cliche in itself, the magic of the cup has been clouded with an overdose of stereotypes and tokenism. Is the only stat we can get for a lower tier club really how many kilograms of lamb they have ordered for the spit?

The Fox Sports obsession with souvlakis at Kingston Heath has gone more than a tad overboard. I'm told (was at the game) that the commentary even referred to the venue as Souvlaki Stadium last night.. They probably think the SC in Bentleigh Greens SC stands for Souvlaki.Club.

Whilst it has been a boon for canteen sales, it can also be seen as demeaning to the Greens as a footballing entity. When they would rather talk about your food than your football, it has to be seen as a slap in the face. How about pondering whether Andrew Redmayne or Tando Velaphi are any better than Alistair Bray? Or could John Anastasiadis ever be considered for an A-League coaching gig without having to do a Phil Stubbins and go overseas for a few years to wash away the VPL/NPL stigma?

A Fox face eating a souvlaki on air has been a staple of network's FFA Cup coverage in it's inaugural season.. Can't recall seeing footage of the commentators eating a hot dog or a bucket of chips at any of the hundreds of A-League games I've watched. Patronising at all?

It's interesting to see such culinary appreciation portrayed by some as a healing in the relationship between "Old Soccer" and "New Football". I've yet to see anyone pushing that line address the issue of the FFA's National Club Identity Policy.

If a group of Afghan refugees decided to start a new club, and wanted it to maintain links to their heritage, they would not be allowed to do so. No tasty treats in the canteen will get you past that. There's more freedom in the detention centres than there is under the FFA in this case.

During the draws the teams outside of the A-League were referred to as "member clubs". This piqued my interest given the legal battles between Victorian clubs and the FFV over the years. Unlike American Express, it seems membership does not have it's privileges. Who would join a club where your membership fees were spent to benefit others, not on anything you are entitled to? That is what has happened when State Federations have been engaged to run the Youth and Women's components of A-League teams.

The compromised draw is something a few would like to see done away with. It probably needs to be maintained though, especially if the plan to eventually have the Final played annually on Australia Day takes place. Once the NPL teams go too far out of season, it will be near impossible for any to progress to the latter stages in an open draw. That would mean no souvlaki, cevapi or kebapi fairytale stories for the broadcaster.

If the draw remains compromised, I'd suggest seeding the A-League clubs to give more prospects of an early upset. Two pots of balls for the A-League clubs, one with the top teams drawn to play each other, and the other for the bottom of the table teams from the previous season to be placed in to face the member clubs.

I also think the week before the A-League season starts to be the ideal time for the FFA Cup Final. It gives member clubs a leg up facing A-League teams in pre-season. It also gives A-League clubs meaningful competitive games rather than training ground friendlies, which is always a preferred arrangement. It would suit teams in the latter stages of the Asian Champions League in dealing with the A-League close season. Like the Charity/Community Shield, it would provide a marquee fixture to lead into the season proper.

Grounds of the Past: St Kevin's Oval, Heyington

Ever since I first saw an old ad in Soccer News promoting Hakoah playing games at St Kevin's Oval in the 1950's I've been fascinated with the idea of top level football being played there.

Going the opposite direction at Heyington Station will take you to what is now Kevin Bartlett Reserve, home of Richmond in NPL1. The St Kevin's Ovals sit wedged between the College next to the station on the west, the Monash Freeway to the north, the Kooyong Tennis Club with it's historic stadium to the east and the Glen Waverley railway line to the south.

The claim "Victoria's Premier Soccer Ground" seems a bit far fetched. Public transport access would have been good, car parking more problematic. Facilities would probably have been pretty basic, no different to the other roped off pitches in open parks that prevailed in that era. If the ground surface is what it is like today, that would probably have been something to boast about though.

There was also a pavilion, as captured in this photograph from Soccer News in 1954:

Now from the Freeway, and the Gardiner's Creek Bike Trail that runs under it, you can see a pavilion between the two ovals. Closer inspection reveals it to be a more modern building than what would have stood on the site when it was a Victorian Division One soccer venue.

To the right (as you look at it in the photo) of the building I found the following plaque:

So that would have been the quaint building captured in Soccer News. Behind the plaque is a tree probably planted at the time of the new facility being built, and behind that a rubbish bin. Which gave me an opportunity to try and take a photo from roughly the same spot the Soccer News photographer took his from.

So that is where top level football was played in Melbourne as it entered the soccer boom of the 1950's. Hakoah would soon find their way to making Middle Park their new home. Securing enclosed grounds was a major issue as the game moved from primarily being participant-based into becoming a spectator sport with the emergence of powerful, ethnic-based clubs.

It may remain unknown to most, but St Kevin's Oval is a part of Victorian football history.

Soccer News, Of Late 1965

I've reduce copied, scanned and uploaded four issues of Soccer News from 1965:

Thursday August 12

Thursday October 14

Thursday November 18

Thursday November 25

Morrie Buckner had page two, with Jim Cook having the back page. Martyn Harris did a round-up of the Metropolitan League. Fred Villiers was editor.

In the August 12 issue, one of the letters to the editor came from controversial J.U.S.T. President Tony Kovac. South Melbourne Hellas sat top of the State League. Jim Cook asks has the Argus Medal had it, and it has because the award would eventually be renamed in honour of Bill Fleming.

The October 14 edition came after the conclusion of the league competitions. The Australia and Dockerty Cups were being contested, and the silly season of interstate/national league talk was underway. Victoria, a first division club from Adelaide, defeated Richmond Alemannia 2-1, probably taking the crown of top German club in Australia in the process. George Scott of Juventus won the Argus Medal, which was presented to him by Stuart Beaton on Channel 7's World of Sport the previous Sunday.

A Dockerty Cup Final preview can be found in the November 18 issue, with Croatia and Slavia set to face-off. Page 4 features a special on South Australian football. Jim Cook's page reveals the chance to see films of Torpedo Moscow v Victoria and Torpedo Moscow v New South Wales at North Melbourne Town Hall. I wonder if those films still exist somewhere?

The Cambodia Catastrophe is covered in the November 25 number. Australia's World Cup qualification chances were crushed with a 6-1 loss against North Korea in Phnom Penh. A double page centrespread celebrates Slavia winning the Dockerty Cup Final. Jim Cook's page list a few honours, including Tommy McPherson (George Cross) winning the Soccer News Best and Fairest Award, with Alistair Scott (Melbourne) taking out the Sporting Globe Best and Fairest Award for the State League. Again, highlights of the Adelaide Croatia v Melbourne Croatia match were shown on Channel 9 in Adelaide the previous week. Another treasure probably lost.

Anyone for Surfing?

In Australian football the phrase "I told you so" is now synonymous with the late, great Johnny Warren. Sadly there are too many instances where it can be used in looking at the foolish errors made by those who administer the game in this state.

One would be the Whittlesea Zebras debacle of 2009. Taking sides with ousted President Sam Cuteri, the FFV saw to it that the Zebras were left homeless at the start of the season by listing their venue as "to be confirmed" in the VPL fixtures. When the FFV should have stood by it's member club, it tried to assist one of it's sponsors in getting the club evicted instead. When the matter went to court, the Zebras were reinstated as tenants of Epping Stadium and the Federation took a financial hit for their troubles.

For the Zebras the damage was done. A pre-season of trying to source grounds to train on leading to players on occasion only getting text message notification of that evening's venue early in the afternoon was a major setback. As was playing home games at their opponent's venues. It all took it's toll and the Zebras were duly relegated.

One would think that the FFV could have been told that council's generally issue ground leases to clubs rather than individuals which would have avoided this shameful episode. When pondering why the FFV took the path it did, it is mainly the C-word that comes to mind, that being corruption.

Once again the FFV was headed for the courts last year, as a coalition of clubs challenged the way it was implementing the NPL in the state. In early November it declared on it's website that as a result of that action, that there would be no NPL in Victoria in 2014. That's the NPL that was won by South Melbourne a few weeks ago. Most people with a clue knew that despite the dramas the NPL would be implemented this year, which leaves us to wonder how clueless the people running the game really are.

Adding two regional teams to the top tier of the NPL was another mistake many could see the outcome of before a ball was kicked in anger. Ballarat Red Devils and Goulburn Valley Suns ended up finishing bottom of the table, and will be relegated barring further FFV manipulation. Would both clubs have benefited by starting out in NPL1?

Whilst the Red Devils put a brave effort, their young side only relegated in injury time on the final day of the season, the Suns were the very definition of a shambles of a club. Highly paid underachievers who were un-competitive for much of the season. They had a high turnover of coaches and those that would tell you so could have made a killing on betting on them being relegated if they could source the illegal foreign bookmakers that may frame markets on such things.

Have the overpaid mercenaries helped the youth of the Valley? Has a season of losing made the Suns a potential crowd-puller or have them written off as not worth bothering with? Can the "lack of preparation" excuse carry any validity if it was only the FFV that though the NPL would not come to pass in 2014?

The new regional side in NPL1, FC Bendigo, at least managed to beat a few strugglers home on the table. Many find it a delicious irony that the one regional club in NPL1 that earned it's place at that level going by it's place in the old State League Division One achieved promotion to NPLV via it's efforts on the pitch. The long established North Geelong Warriors came to the fore, whilst the proposed Greater Geelong Galaxy can remain in one that's still far, far away.

Sadly, for those of us who like to revel in being able to say "I told you so", Surf Coast United did not accept the NPL license offered to them after a very late change of heart. Going by their less than stellar eighth placing in State League Division Four West, there is nothing to suggest they could have been anything other than an embarrassment to the competition.

All they threatened to bring to the NPL was the LOLS. Maybe it was the proposed new game of Great Ocean Roar (presumably of Laughter) that saw some at the club see the light and tell the others so. Good for football, bad for those looking to surf the wave of the FFV's poor vision and incompetence being further exposed.

Of Best and Fairests of 1990

Leading votes in the 1990 League Best and Fairests

The above link is to another scan of a document from the archives, this time leading votegetters in the 1990 Victorian, Provisional and Amateur League Best and Fairest Awards.

In the First Division of the Victorian League, Werribee City's Stephen Hackett was the winner, by two votes from Maribyrnong Polonia's Bogdan Bonk. It was a big effort from Bonk in a relegated side, and two years later he would help guide North Geelong to the VPL Championship, taking out the VPL Gold Medal at the same time. Others amongst the votes include future A-League coaches, a Four Diego and various club legends. Hackett would repeat his success the following year.

George Campbell of Nunawading City took out the award in Division Two, by a clear six votes. It was an illustrious beaten brigade, with Richmond's Jim Maclean (former VSL Rothman's Medal Winner and Bill Fleming Medal Winner) and Keilor's Tommy Cumming (two-time VSL Rothman's Medal Winner and two-time Bill Fleming Winner) in the top six. Maclean would go on to win the award the following season.

Moorabbin City's Tommy Fox claimed the Third Diviison award by a vote from five equal runner's-up. Iain Stirton, who would soon transfer to Moorabbin, was the leading votegetter for Seaford United. Here he is carrying his son David (current NPLV star with Bentleigh Greens) off the pitch after Moorabbin's 4-1 win at Eltham/Diamond Valley United in 1994, in which he scored twice.

Boronia's Gary Radcliffe was the winner in the Fourth Division, by a margin of three points from East Brunswick/Ivanhoe's Bobby McGuinness. Both clubs no longer exist in the State League landscape, like others in the division that year including Regent, Springvale Condors, Karingal United, Ferntree Gully and Hawthorn Citizens. Rosanna became Banyule City, Oakleigh Suburbs have a link to the current Box Hill United and Hamlyn Rangers became Geelong Rangers.

Stan Webster of South Dandenong (now Dandenong Thunder) was triumphant in the Provisional League Division One award by eleven votes from team-mate Hasan Sepetci. In Provisional League Division Two the winner was Lyndale United's Ivam Grgas. Bruno Maiolo was the victor in Provisional League Division Three.

From Provisional League Division Two, Ballarat would rise to the NPLV. South Springvale had yet to start their Cup giant-killing, with Frankston United later to become Peninsula Strikers with Brintons, Kew Eagles and Ascot St.Marks fading into oblivion.

It was a one-two in the Amateur League Division One award for Waverley Wanderers, with Ian Blackhurst pipping Marcus Creak by a vote. Eamon Beamish of Old Scotch was tied for eighth. He currently coaches the club in State League Division Two South East.

Cretan's Michael Koutsakis won the award for Amateur League Division Two. Cretan would become South Wantirna and rose up a few divisions before disbanding when their ground was acquired for the building of the Eastlink Freeway.
