New Victorian Football Statistical History Update

I've released the latest update of the Victorian Football Statisical History in the link below.

Since the last one there have been a few little finds, and a bulk of new material added. The ASFV/VicSoccer league champions have been added. The Continental Competitions section has been added. The Other Competitions section has expanded. 

Lots of work has been done on the Regional Leagues, with still a lot more to do. With Geelong the league champions lineage is pretty much complete, but the Grand Finals list is lacking.

New regional additions include the Northern Victorian League that ran alongside the Sunraysia League at times. Also included is the South Western Border League, primarily a South Australian competition with some Victorian clubs. I have included it for the years it has the South West Border name, as that is a Victorian geographical perspective. Since the last issue the second and final season of the 1920's Alexandra and District League has come to light. I'm throwing in the Mallacoota Cup for good measure.

At some point this year I will have another stab at the 1880's era. The 1972 GTV 9 Indoor Soccer Comptition final table is only requires the final round results (from January 25) to be complete. The Sunraysia, Ballarat and Bendigo sections still need more work or clarification.

Soccer Star Archive Updated

Thanks to the efforts of Tony Persoglia and George Cotsanis, the Soccer Star Archive has been updated with over 50 new issues added.

Soccer Star was the Les Shorrock-produced successor to Soccer Action, and was published from 1988 until early 1990. It's Victorian State League and NSL coverage was very strong. 

The Industrial & Amateur League provided good coverage, whilst the lower Victorian and Provisional League coverage was left up to the clubs themselves and as a result was not widespread. It was covering these leagues in Soccer Week and Soccer Action that had previously been Les Shorrock's forte. Nunawading City, Diamond Valley United and South Dandenong were amongst the most reliable club contributors. 

There are still issues missing from the archive, so if anyone can assist in filling the gaps please get in touch. 

Soccer Star Archive

Amateur League Records

Emanating from a factories competition held in the late 1960's, the Mooroolbark Works Cup, the Metropolitan Industrial Soccer League was founded in 1971. It steadily grew under the leadership of Fred Habbe, Ron Darlingtion and David Chant, and continued to expand and evolve through the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. A great history up to that point is found in Issue #2 of League Extra in 1990. 

The League became the Amateur Soccer Federation of Victoria and then VicSoccer. Many current Football Victoria clubs began by playing in it's competitions. The League was an amazing blend of nationalities. Ethnic names were never banned, and there are dozens of teams from countries that never had any representation in VSF/FFV competitions. At times it was also a bit like the Wild West, with some lawless clubs frequently assaulting referees and having matches abandoned, leading to many being expelled.

Sitting well below the State, Metropolitan, Provisional and District Leagues, it's records have not been readily available. Tables and fixtures briefly appeared in the VSF Yearbooks in the mid-1970's but after that you have to scour through Soccer Action to find any details. There is nothing in the vast content on OzFootball about the League.

To resolve this issue, I have gone through the State Library of Victoria's collection of League News ranging from 1990-2003 and created an archive here. Added to it are issues post 2003 that I have been able to download from the old VicSoccer website, where not all old links work so these are few and far between. Another emerging issue in the difficulty of record keeping and research then strikes, where information disappear as websites and results services are changed without the backup of printed documents existing as everything goes online. There are further compilications created by the killing of John Kelly at the time he was running VicSoccer and the trial and seizing of computers by the police that followed. 

Hopefully there is enough in this archive to assist anyone hoping to research clubs that competed in the League get started. There are still some Fixture Lists and Club Contact Guides that will be added to it. If anyone has missing issues of League News, please get in touch so they can be added and shared.

The League News in the David Chant years is a superb record, ample in great content. The additional information wanes a little in the John Kelly years, perhaps due to the switch to a move online.

I've tried to compile a full honour roll of league champions. It is complete up until 2003 but then for the reasons listed above, some gaps start to appear. Once again, if you can assist with adding to it, please get in touch.

The Richmond Alemannia History website is finally up and running. Most of the results and tables, as many of the scorers and line-ups available. All the match progammes and videos I could find. All in one place, in an easy to find order - season by season and chronological. 

Still more do find and do, it is constantly being worked on. Share with someone that may enjoy some memories of what was once a great club.

The latest version of The Victorian Football Statistical History is now available in the link below:

A few more Cup Final results have been added, but still a long way from being complete. Some sections have been added or expanded, mainly Regional Leagues, Other Competitions and interstate carnivals added to National Competitions.

Also all the new updates to the Doug Butcher Booklets are now up.

There also three new match programmes for John Roberts and six for Mark Robertson in the Australians Overseas Match Programmes archive.

In the Articles archive the Sporting Life All-Australian Football Teams for 1948 and the Inside Story of Soccer by Alf Jennings from Sporting Life in August 1949 have been added.

Contributor Updates

As well as the weekly updates to the Newspaper Compilations archive, the archive section of the blog continues to grow with recent contributions from leading historians Doug Butcher and Dimitri Peppas.

Doug Butcher, who has just turned eighty years old, has sent through Soccer Touring Teams To Australia 1970-1979 to add to the Doug Butcher Booklets archive. His extensive research covers Australian men's national team results, Olyroos results and the details of touring teams travels across Australia.

Dimitri Peppas has sent through his South Australian Football Honours documents for 2023 and 2024, as well as South Australian Men's First Division Statistical Guides for 2023, 2024 and 2025. They can all be found in the Dimitri Peppas Documents archive. He has also sent through eleven MetroStars match programmes from the 2024 season which can be found in the Match Programmes archive.

Before the end of the year I will be releasing an update to the Victorian Football Statistical History.

Shepparton City Soccer Club Reunion

Mario Varricchio, the man behind the Shepparton City Soccer Club History Page on Facebook, is organising a reunion event for past players, members and friends. Hopefully they get a good turn out, it will be a great catch-up for those who do attend. Please spread the word of the event around if you can, as there will be some interested in it who have moved to Melbourne and other areas that are no longer in the local loop and could appreciate the notification.

There will be a Reunion for all past players, members & friends of the original Shepparton City Soccer Club that played between1956 and 1984.

Doug Butcher Updates

The great historian Doug Butcher has sent his updated files for the Socceroos, Olyroos and touring teams to Australia records. As usual they are very detailed and thorough.

They can be found on the Doug Butcher Booklets page, the updates being the items all ending in 2020-2023.

Graeme McGinty has also sent a few more match programmes through. They include Australia v Hajduk Split in Adelaide in 1949 and some 1982 Morwell Falcons state league matches.

The Newspaper Compilations have been given their own page as they were taking up too much of the Archives & Documents page. New pages there include the Waverley Gazette (for 1969) and Die Woche in Australien. At the moment the main focus is on completing all of the Moorabbin News and Die Woche in Australian to assist on my Moorabbin City and Richmond Alemannia blogs. I've also almost completed the Hrvatski Tjednik collection, where the coverage has diminished greatly in the mid-1980's. 

Once they are done I will be attacking missing 1960's Victorian details with more vigour.

Soccer Week Archive Updated

The Soccer Week  Archive has been updated to now almost be fully complete.

Soccer Week was an independent paper which ran from mid-season in 1974 to just short of the end of the 1975 season. It filled the void after the demise of Soccer News, and was soon replaced with the superior Soccer Action.

Previously the Archive included only editions which had been scanned in full from the available newspapers sourced. George Cotsanis (of My World Is Round) had taken a vast amount of photos of the State Library Victoria's (SLV) bound volume which he has shared around over the years. Tony Persoglia made some PDF's from these images, but I was reluctant to add them to this archive for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the tight binding on the SLV volume meant some columns were hard to make out. Then there was the matter of not all pages being photographed, as I assume George skipped full page ads and possibly some of the Soccerpools full pages (which sometimes may have had interstate or overseas snippets). Thirdly, the fact that the paper regularly changed the number of pages it contained made it harder to figure out if/how many pages may be missing. Generally the off-season/pre-season issues contained 8, going up to 12 when the Metropolitan League kicked off, and extending to 16 on the odd occasion. Also in some cases the date of publication was also lost to the tight binding. There was also a period of time where the paper cutting alignment must have been off, leading to text at the bottom of pages disappearing.  

For these reasons I limited what I placed in the archive in the hope of finding access to unbound issues to scan properly. With this failing to eventuate, I decided to re-visit the SLV bound volume. I took additional photos, and made PDF's from them, whilst also adding the PDF's created by Tony from George's photos to the files. This gives a few pictures of each page, hopefully between them providing a decent enough image to work out what was going on. The correct publication dates of some issues were established. Which gives us now an almost complete record, with only July 23 of 1975 missing from the SLV collection.

I've just about settled on finalising the season files for 1924-1926 to submit to Tony Persoglia for auditing and adding to OzFootball.

Before finalising I will have one more attempt at settling on initials for Barber and Boniface of Preston. I will also try and find any link to the Inglis that was with Lincoln Mills and Scotland in the Local International in 1924 as being the Jock Inglis that was later at Prahran City.

Have settled on J Maxwell for the Windsor/Prahran goalscorer (after years of floating between J, G and T), and J Aitken for the Footscray Thistle/Victoria/Australia defender. Aitken has also been listed a a W elsewhere, but the Footscray Mail is pretty consistent with J. I think this also makes him the "Jess Aicken" that was later at Springvale but I need to work on that a bit more.

Moorabbin City Soccer Club History Launching March 26

A new website, Moorabbin City Soccer Club History, will be launched on the evening of May 26.

As many senior, reserve, thirds and colts team match records as can be found will be available to view. Each season containing links to the full match programme or any video of the games that exist.

There will be photo galleries with both team and player photos. There will also be a newly written club history, list of honours and lists of known award winners.

Download them quickly, because on May 9, 2022 I will be cancelling my Google Drive subscription rendering most of the links on the archives useless and pretty much closing them down. 

Having to deal with the security updates by Google last year requiring around half of the links on the blog needing to be re-done really drained my enthusiasm for maintaining the blog. When more links were made useless by the security updates after that, a request for support from them went unanswered and after four months the only thing I heard from them was the email alerting me that the annual subscription is due on May 10.

Australian Croatian Soccer Tournament Programmes Page Added

One of the most rewarding thing about maintaining the archives on this blog is when someone contributes a collection to be added. It's an added bonus when they have done the scanning themselves, which happens to be first rate as well. 

So today I am happy to add a new page to the programmes archive, the Australian Croatian Soccer Tournament Programmes page. Great thanks go to Tony Cavar of Hurstville Zagreb for sending through these fifteen programmes ranging from 1979 to 2013.

I've added one honour roll, and will look to expand this in time. For now though, there are many team photographs to crop and add to my collection, and lots of mini club histories to go through. For many, these will bring back great memories. Enjoy!

There have been 111 new issues of Soccer News added to the Soccer News Archive. They have been sourced and compiled by taking photos of the collection housed at the MCC Library which was put together by Roy Hay. This takes the total of editions contained in the archive to 486.
